Russia Sanctions UK Teenager for Exposing Cryptocurrency Laundering Network
Alexander Browder, a 17-year-old British student and son of Kremlin critic Sir Bill Browder, has been added to Russia's sanctions list. The move follows his research into A7A5, a ruble-pegged stablecoin allegedly used to finance Russia's war in Ukraine. His findings were instrumental in UK government efforts to dismantle the cryptocurrency network.
Browder's 18-month investigation was featured in a Henry Jackson Society report, which analyzed 164 instances of cryptocurrency laundering over two decades. He also advised UK ministers on sanctions targeting individuals and companies linked to A7A5. "The sanctions don't intimidate me," Browder told the Metro. "It tells me I've touched a nerve with my work."
The Kremlin's decision to sanction a high school student is unprecedented. Browder, who describes himself as "the first high school student in the world to ever be sanctioned by an authoritarian regime for uncovering corruption," vows to continue his research with renewed rigor.
